The Tragedy of Darfur

For over 15 years, the people of Darfur, Sudan have faced displacement, war, and persecution. In 2003, a civil war broke out, leading to a humanitarian crisis that has caused the displacement of over 2.5 million people. The war has caused immense suffering, with thousands of people killed, many of them civilians. Women and children have been particularly affected, with reports of widespread rape, torture, and other forms of gender-based violence.

The war has been characterized by ethnic and religious tensions, with the majority of the population in Darfur belonging to African tribal groups and the government forces belonging to Arab tribes. This has led to a conflict characterized by attacks on civilians, with government forces accused of carrying out mass killings and other war crimes.

The situation in Darfur is still dire and the people remain in need of assistance. Food insecurity is an ongoing problem, with some areas unable to access adequate nutrition. Access to healthcare is also a major concern, with medical facilities unable to meet the needs of the population.

It is important that we come together to help the people of Darfur. We must stand up against injustice and work to ensure that their basic human rights are respected. We can do this by supporting organizations that are working to provide aid and assistance to the people of Darfur. We can also raise awareness of the conflict and its effects by educating ourselves and others on the situation in Darfur. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by this conflict.

Who We Are & How We Make a Difference

The Fur Community Association of VA is a nonprofit that works in partnership with ReEstablish Richmond and other humanitarian aid agencies to support the refugee community that has resettled in Richmond. The mission of the Fur Community Association of Virginia is twofold: to acknowledge the shared experiences of displaced peoples across the world and provide humanitarian aid, and to preserve and celebrate the Fur culture.

Our Vision is to establish a community center where people from the Fur Community can gather to celebrate and share culture. We hope to utilize the center for cultural and language education as well as create a safe space where diverse groups can gather and learn about one another.

Preservation & Celebration of Culture

Ensuring the Future of Darfurian Heritage

We preserve and celebrate the culture of the Fur people. We aim to ensure that each generation of Darfurian people know and understand where they came from. We do this by holding cultural celebrations for the community and language and culture classes for the youngest members of the Darfur community.

EDUCATION

Educating Virginians About Darfur

Using Storytelling to Engage the Community and Create Positive Change

We educate Virginians about the history of the conflict in Darfur and how they can provide support to address the continued humanitarian crisis. We do this by storytelling, participating in speaking events across the state of Virginia.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Supporting Darfuri Families

A Warm Welcome and Ongoing Assistance

We provide financial assistance for resettled people from Darfur. We give each new family a small amount of "welcome money" to get them started in their new community and provide ongoing financial assistance when emergencies arise.

HEALTH EDUCATION

Health & Wellness for Refugees

Education and Connecting to Health Resources

We provide health education to newly resettled people from Darfur. We do this by supporting the overall health and wellness of our people by connecting them to health-related resources.
